03.22.25 Healing Through Houseplants: My Journey with Mental Health and Houseplants
For as long as I can remember, I’ve struggled with depression and anxiety. Some days felt impossible—like I was carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders, trapped in a cycle of overthinking and exhaustion. In April 2021, my grandmother, Delores, passed away. At her funeral, I brought home a peace lily in her memory. At the time, I didn’t know how much that plant would change my life.
At first, it was just about keeping her plant alive. I watered it, made sure it had enough light, and watched for signs of new growth. But over time, it became more than just a plant! That peace lily was my first houseplant, and it unknowingly started something bigger. Now, nearly four years later, it’s still with me, thriving with seven beautiful flowers in bloom. And around it? Over 200 more plants that have become part of my healing journey.
There’s real science behind why plants can be so therapeutic. Studies show that tending to houseplants can lower stress, improve mood, and even reduce anxiety. Research has found that touching plant leaves can calm the nervous system. Studies confirm that plants improve air quality, benefiting overall well-being. But beyond the research, I’ve lived it. My plants gave me purpose when I felt lost. They taught me patience, mindfulness, and the beauty of slow growth.
Looking back, I never expected a single peace lily to lead me here—to a home filled with plants, to a passion that turned into Rosies Roots, and to a deep understanding of how plants can heal in ways we don’t always expect. If you’re struggling, I encourage you to start small—maybe with one plant and one deep breath. You are not alone, and growth is always possible.
